Steenberg Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Manufacturer: Steenberg

Steenberg Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc  is the flagship Sauvignon Blanc of Steenberg Vineyards and a pure expression of the exceptional terroir of Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine-growing region. Produced exclusively from the finest Sauvignon Blanc parcels on the estate, this wine represents the pinnacle of Steenberg's Sauvignon Blanc portfolio. The grapes are carefully selected from the estate's top vineyard sites and harvested at optimal ripeness. After gentle crushing and extended skin contact at low temperatures, the juice undergoes a slow, cool fermentation to preserve aromatic purity and freshness. The wine is then matured on its fine lees for nine months, adding texture, complexity, and remarkable depth. The bouquet is intensely expressive, revealing aromas of nasturtium, sugar-snap pea, fresh asparagus, and capsicum, supported by vibrant citrus notes. The palate is focused and elegant, offering layers of fresh lemon, subtle dried apricot, and mangetout. A mouth-watering acidity and pronounced mineral character carry through to a long, textured finish, creating a Sauvignon Blanc of exceptional precision and ageing potential.Steenberg Black Swan is a sophisticated cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc that beautifully captures the unique personality of Constantia and rewards both immediate enjoyment and extended cellaring.

About the Winery

Steenberg Wine Estate is the oldest registered farm in the Cape, with a history dating back to 1682 when the estate was founded by Catharina Ras in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Originally known as Swaaneweide (“The Feeding Place of Swans”), it was among the earliest agricultural properties established in the region. Over more than three centuries, Steenberg evolved from a historic farm into one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates. A major transformation took place during the extensive redevelopment of the 1990s, when the vineyards, cellar facilities and historic buildings were carefully restored. Today, Steenberg is renowned for producing premium wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, that express the distinctive character of the cool-climate Constantia region. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in respect for its rich heritage, environmentally responsible farming and the pursuit of elegant wines that reflect their origin. Through a combination of history, innovation and exceptional quality, Steenberg has earned its place among South Africa’s most respected wine producers.

Terroir

The terroir of Steenberg is shaped by its unique location in the Constantia Valley, one of South Africa’s coolest wine-growing regions. The vineyards are situated at elevations of approximately 60 to 160 metres above sea level on south-eastern slopes that benefit from refreshing maritime breezes from False Bay. A key feature of the estate is its decomposed granite soils, which retain sufficient moisture while providing ideal conditions for balanced vine growth. Mild temperatures, reliable winter rainfall and an extended growing season allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving aromatic intensity, freshness and natural acidity. This combination of cool maritime influences, diverse microclimates and mineral-rich granite soils gives Steenberg wines their distinctive elegance, vibrancy and strong sense of place, characteristics that are particularly evident in the estate’s acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc wines.
