Steenberg

Steenberg Vineyards forms part of the historic Steenberg Estate in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Located in one of South Africa’s coolest wine-growing regions, the estate benefits from the influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, high annual rainfall and cooling sea breezes, creating ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc and other wines distinguished by freshness, elegance and minerality. Today, Steenberg is recognised as one of Constantia’s leading wine producers and is particularly renowned for its premium Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines. The estate’s history dates back to 1682, when German immigrant Catharina Ras was granted land by Governor Simon van der Stel in what was then a remote area beneath the Steenberg mountains. Originally known as Swaaneweide (“Feeding Place of the Swans”), the property is regarded as one of the oldest registered farms in the Cape. The first vineyards were planted in the late seventeenth century, establishing a winemaking tradition that has endured for more than three centuries. Following an extensive restoration and redevelopment programme in the 1990s, the vineyards, cellar and historic buildings were revitalised, creating a modern wine estate that honours its remarkable heritage. Today, Steenberg focuses on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and selected red varieties that express the distinctive cool-climate terroir of Constantia.
