Southern Right Wines | Specialized Pinotage & Sauvignon Blanc | Hemel-en-Aarde

Southern Right

Founded in 1994 by Anthony Hamilton Russell, Southern Right was born from a vision to prove that Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc could achieve world-class elegance in a cool-climate maritime setting. Located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just two kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, the estate is deeply connected to its environment; it is named after the majestic whales that visit the nearby bay, and every bottle sold contributes to their conservation. In 2005, the brand established its permanent home on a sprawling 448-hectare property characterized by stony, clay-rich soils ideal for these specific varietals. To ensure the highest level of precision, a dedicated cellar was completed in 2009, allowing for estate-specific winemaking that highlights the unique "Overberg" terroir. Beyond the vineyards, the farm operates as a private nature reserve, protecting over 200 hectares of indigenous Cape Mountain Fynbos. This commitment to both land and quality has earned Southern Right consistent acclaim, with its Sauvignon Blanc frequently cited as a top global value and its Pinotage celebrated for its refined, age-worthy character.
