Manufacturer: Steenberg

Steenberg 1682 Pinot Noir MCC 2016 is an elegant vintage Méthode Cap Classique crafted exclusively from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the cool-climate vineyards of Constantia. Produced using the traditional bottle-fermented method, this exceptional sparkling rosé showcases the finesse and ageing potential of Pinot Noir while reflecting the unique maritime influence of South Africa's oldest wine-growing region. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and gently whole-bunch pressed to obtain the purest juice. After primary fermentation, the wine undergoes a second fermentation in bottle and matures on its lees for an extended period, developing exceptional complexity, a creamy texture, and a remarkably fine mousse. The bouquet is beautifully expressive, offering aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries, raspberry, rose petals, and citrus zest, complemented by delicate notes of brioche and freshly baked pastry. The palate is precise and elegant, with vibrant acidity balancing layers of red berry fruit and subtle savoury nuances. Fine, persistent bubbles carry through to a long, mineral finish marked by freshness and sophistication.Steenberg 1682 Pinot Noir MCC 2016 is a distinguished sparkling wine that combines purity, elegance, and complexity, making it an outstanding choice for celebrations and fine dining alike.

About the Winery

Steenberg Wine Estate is the oldest registered farm in the Cape, with a history dating back to 1682 when the estate was founded by Catharina Ras in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Originally known as Swaaneweide (“The Feeding Place of Swans”), it was among the earliest agricultural properties established in the region. Over more than three centuries, Steenberg evolved from a historic farm into one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates. A major transformation took place during the extensive redevelopment of the 1990s, when the vineyards, cellar facilities and historic buildings were carefully restored. Today, Steenberg is renowned for producing premium wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, that express the distinctive character of the cool-climate Constantia region. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in respect for its rich heritage, environmentally responsible farming and the pursuit of elegant wines that reflect their origin. Through a combination of history, innovation and exceptional quality, Steenberg has earned its place among South Africa’s most respected wine producers.

Terroir

The terroir of Steenberg is shaped by its unique location in the Constantia Valley, one of South Africa’s coolest wine-growing regions. The vineyards are situated at elevations of approximately 60 to 160 metres above sea level on south-eastern slopes that benefit from refreshing maritime breezes from False Bay. A key feature of the estate is its decomposed granite soils, which retain sufficient moisture while providing ideal conditions for balanced vine growth. Mild temperatures, reliable winter rainfall and an extended growing season allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving aromatic intensity, freshness and natural acidity. This combination of cool maritime influences, diverse microclimates and mineral-rich granite soils gives Steenberg wines their distinctive elegance, vibrancy and strong sense of place, characteristics that are particularly evident in the estate’s acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc wines.
