Steenberg 1682 MCC Chardonnay

Manufacturer: Steenberg

Steenberg 1682 MCC Chardonnay is an elegant Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique, crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes using the traditional bottle-fermented method. Named after the founding year of Steenberg, the oldest farm in Constantia, this sparkling wine combines precision, freshness, and sophistication in a timeless style. The grapes are hand-harvested at relatively low sugar levels to preserve their natural acidity and freshness. Following gentle whole-bunch pressing, the base wine undergoes a second fermentation in bottle according to the traditional Méthode Cap Classique process. The wine then matures on its lees for 12 to 18 months, developing finesse, complexity, and a beautifully delicate mousse. The bouquet is vibrant and expressive, revealing aromas of Granny Smith apple, candied lemon peel, and white peach, complemented by subtle notes of toasted croissant and pastry. On the palate, the wine is lively and refined, offering crisp acidity, elegant fruit purity, and a creamy texture. Flavours of lemon cordial, honeyed nectarine, pistachio, and delicate brioche unfold seamlessly towards a long, refreshing finish.Steenberg 1682 MCC Chardonnay is a versatile sparkling wine that effortlessly combines freshness and complexity, making it equally suited as an aperitif or as a partner to refined cuisine.

About the Winery

Steenberg Wine Estate is the oldest registered farm in the Cape, with a history dating back to 1682 when the estate was founded by Catharina Ras in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Originally known as Swaaneweide (“The Feeding Place of Swans”), it was among the earliest agricultural properties established in the region. Over more than three centuries, Steenberg evolved from a historic farm into one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates. A major transformation took place during the extensive redevelopment of the 1990s, when the vineyards, cellar facilities and historic buildings were carefully restored. Today, Steenberg is renowned for producing premium wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, that express the distinctive character of the cool-climate Constantia region. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in respect for its rich heritage, environmentally responsible farming and the pursuit of elegant wines that reflect their origin. Through a combination of history, innovation and exceptional quality, Steenberg has earned its place among South Africa’s most respected wine producers.

Terroir

The terroir of Steenberg is shaped by its unique location in the Constantia Valley, one of South Africa’s coolest wine-growing regions. The vineyards are situated at elevations of approximately 60 to 160 metres above sea level on south-eastern slopes that benefit from refreshing maritime breezes from False Bay. A key feature of the estate is its decomposed granite soils, which retain sufficient moisture while providing ideal conditions for balanced vine growth. Mild temperatures, reliable winter rainfall and an extended growing season allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving aromatic intensity, freshness and natural acidity. This combination of cool maritime influences, diverse microclimates and mineral-rich granite soils gives Steenberg wines their distinctive elegance, vibrancy and strong sense of place, characteristics that are particularly evident in the estate’s acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc wines.
