A regal and profoundly complex wine, named after the five towering stone pine trees that watch over its unique vineyard site. This full-bodied Chardonnay showcases a superb balance of ripe fruit and sophisticated minerality. The bouquet is defined by characters of ripe citrus, melon, and peach, elegantly rounded out by well-judged oaking. On the palate, the wine reveals a long and creamy finish, supported by a firm acid backbone that ensures freshness despite its richness. Matured for 14 months in 300L French oak hogsheads (72% new), this wine offers remarkable depth and an aging potential of 10 or more years. A true icon of Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, it rewards both early enjoyment and patient cellaring.

About the Winery
Established in 1682, Rustenberg is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious wine estates. The modern era of the winery began in 1941 when Peter and Pamela Barlow purchased the farm. Their son, Simon, took over in 1987 and today oversees operations alongside his son, Murray. The Barlow family is credited with restoring the prestige of this historic site, which is now a National Monument and a symbol of South African winemaking elegance. Under the direction of cellar master Noel Sperland and Murray Barlow (twice named Young Winemaker of the Year), Rustenberg focuses on classic varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Syrah. The estate is renowned for its iconic flagship wines, most notably the Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon and Five Soldiers Chardonnay, which consistently receive top international accolades and scores of 90+ points.
Terroir
The terroir of Rustenberg is defined by its position on the south-western slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, creating a distinct natural "amphitheater." The vineyards span a range of altitudes from 180 to 450 meters above sea level, allowing for a diverse array of varietals to be grown in their ideal conditions. Cooler, high-elevation parcels are dedicated to Chardonnay, while the warmer lower slopes are perfectly suited for Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils consist primarily of rich, red decomposed granite with high clay content, providing excellent water retention and imparting structure and depth to the wines. Due to its proximity to the ocean (False Bay), the estate benefits from afternoon sea breezes that cool the vines during hot summer days. This synergy of altitude, granite soils, and maritime influence produces wines with exceptional freshness, refined tannins, and significant aging potential.
