Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Manufacturer: Rust en Vrede

2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant and refined expression of Stellenbosch terroir, offering a lighter and more nuanced profile reminiscent of the classic 2016 vintage. The nose is highly perfumed, featuring attractive aromas of lavender and blackcurrant, beautifully framed by notes of cedar and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is lively and expressive, revealing layers of black and red cherries complemented by sophisticated hints of graphite, espresso, and dark chocolate. Firm, youthful tannins and a zesty acidity provide a solid structure, leading to a long, lingering finish dominated by cherry notes. Matured for 18 months in 100% French oak (20% new), this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon balances power with remarkable finesse.

About the Winery

In 1977, legendary rugby figure Jannie Engelbrecht and his wife Ellen took over the historic Rust en Vrede farm, which boasts a history dating back to 1694. The family immediately began an extensive restoration of the estate and its Cape Dutch buildings from 1780, which are now designated National Monuments. Jannie produced the first vintage of the modern era in 1978, establishing the winery's exclusive focus on premium red wines. In 1988, his son Jean Engelbrecht took the helm, solidifying the winery's position on the international stage. Rust en Vrede became the first South African producer to create a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. These wines gained global recognition when President Nelson Mandela selected them to be served at the Nobel Peace Prizebanquet in Oslo in 1993. A new era began in 2021 when Danielle le Roux was appointed head winemaker, succeeding the long-serving Coenie Snyman. Danielle, a qualified Cape Wine Master, works closely with viticulturist Dirk Mouton to maintain the estate's legacy. Under her leadership, the winery continues to excel; its flagship wine has appeared five times in Wine Spectator’s prestigious Top 100 Wines of the World list, consistently earning scores of 90 points and above.

Terroir

The Stellenbosch wine region, nestled in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain, is widely regarded as one of the world's premier locations for red varietals. Rust en Vrede itself occupies a unique thermal pocket (warm microcosm) within the Helderberg area, which is naturally warmer than its neighbors. This "sun trap" provides the perfect environment for the full ripening of late-maturing varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The vineyards are sheltered by the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains, which act as a natural amphitheater, shielding the vines from harsh winds. At the same time, the estate's proximity to False Bay ensures cooling afternoon sea breezes that preserve acidity and balance. The ancient Tukulu soils, composed of decomposed granite and clay, impart a distinctive structure and profound depth to the wines.
