Reyneke Red Blend Organic 2017

Reyneke Red Blend Organic 2017

Manufacturer: Reyneke

Listed as a blend, however, it is dominated by Shiraz, complemented by a few percent of Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose opens with aromas of red cherries, violets, spices and black pepper. There are also notes of smoke, black berries and damp tobacco. On the palate, there are strong notes of pepper, spice, dark fruit and nutmeg. An absolutely typical Shiraz that is well balanced, with good structure and a long but elegant finish. Only a small part of the wine (12%) is aged in small and used oak barrels, the rest is aged in concrete tanks for 12 months.

About the winery

We could talk for hours about how wine used to be made. When the Reyneke farm began operating as "Uitzicht" in 1863, there were no chemicals or technological advances. Only the soil and nature. Uitzicht (which is Dutch for "view") is situated on a site overlooking Stellenbosch and False Bay. It has northern, eastern and southern slopes. The best land is planted with vines and the rest is complemented by vineyards with pastures, compost heaps and wildlife sites.

Thanks to biodynamic farming, the soil becomes 'alive'. They leave it to provide energy for the wines that go into the cellar. At Reyneke, they say that the dream of every serious winemaker is to find a place with an ideal location, where the soil composition is special and the climate is right. The aim is then to express these qualities in the grapes and produce a wine that uniquely reflects the location. The winery does not use any additives in the growing process or in the cellar. They take a hands-off approach to winemaking and rather watch the winemaking process to bring out the local terroir.

Terroir

Stellenbosch lies just 40 km east of Cape Town. The Simonsberg Mountains to the north separate it from Paarl, while the Hottentot Holland Mountains to the east separate it from Walker Bay. False Bay lies about 12 miles (20 km) to the south. Granite and sandstone soils are found throughout Stellenbosch. Due to their high clay content, they have excellent water retention properties, although they are free draining.

Sufficient winter rainfall allows growers to keep irrigation to a minimum. Much has been made of the suitability of the soils in Stellenbosch for growing particularly premium red wine grapes. The climate in the area is relatively hot and dry, although the influence of the False Bay sea is evident in the south. In the afternoons, the vineyards are buffeted by a cool south-easterly wind, which refreshes the grapes after the hot morning sun. White wine varieties are often planted closer to the ocean where this effect is more pronounced.
