About the Winery

Delheim Wine Estate traces its origins to the slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, where the historic Driesprong farm was acquired by the Hoheisen family in 1938. The name Delheim, meaning “Deli’s home,” was chosen in honour of Del Hoheisen, whose dedication helped shape the estate’s future. The winery’s defining chapter began in 1951 when Michael Hans “Spatz” Sperling arrived from Germany and brought with him an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for winemaking. Through innovation, perseverance and a pioneering vision, he transformed Delheim into one of South Africa’s most respected family-owned wine estates. Delheim became renowned not only for its premium wines but also for its role in developing wine tourism, with Spatz Sperling helping to establish the first Stellenbosch Wine Route in 1971. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in environmental stewardship, sustainable farming and the protection of the unique biodiversity of the Simonsberg region. Today, Delheim is celebrated for its award-winning wines, strong family heritage and enduring commitment to conservation, securing its place among South Africa’s leading wine producers.

Terroir

The terroir of Delheim Wine Estate is shaped by its unique location on the slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most renowned wine-growing regions. The vineyards are planted across varying elevations, where a combination of weathered granite soils, clay layers and rocky subsoils provides excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for the vines. The Mediterranean climate of the Cape also plays a crucial role, moderated by cooling maritime influences from the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. Warm sunny days promote optimal grape ripening, while cooler nights help preserve freshness, aromatic intensity and natural acidity. The diversity of vineyard aspects and microclimates allows a wide range of grape varieties to thrive, developing distinctive structure, complexity and elegance within the Simonsberg terroir. This combination of elevation, soil composition and favourable climatic conditions gives Delheim wines their characteristic balance, depth and authentic sense of place.
