David & Nadia Chenin Blanc 2024

David & Nadia Chenin Blanc 2024

Manufacturer: David & Nadia

2024 David & Nadia Chenin Blanc is a masterful expression of Swartland terroir, crafted from nine distinct Certified Heritage Vineyards (CHV) planted between 1968 and 1986 (p. 1). This wine captures the essence of soil diversity—from the granitic slopes of Paardeberg to iron-rich clay and limestone. On the nose, it offers a pure and focused bouquet of white peach, pear, and citrus blossoms, underpinned by a distinct flinty minerality (p. 1). The palate is refined and detailed, showcasing a vibrant energy and balanced acidity (pH 3.24). Maturation for 11 months in old neutral French oak (75%) and concrete eggs (25%) adds a subtle, layered texture without masking the fruit purity. With its crisp finish and exceptional depth, it is a quintessential example of high-altitude, minimal-intervention Chenin Blanc.

About the Winery

David & Nadia is a family-owned project established in 2010 by husband-and-wife team David and Nadia Sadie in the Swartland region. David, a Swartland native, and Nadia, a qualified soil scientist and viticulturist, joined forces to craft wines that are a genuine reflection of their land. They are considered among the "young guns" of the South African wine revolution, shifting away from bold, oak-driven styles toward elegance, freshness, and minerality. Their philosophy is rooted in biological farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, utilizing only indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur. Based in a restored 220-year-old cellar on the Paardebosch farm, they produce highly sought-after ranges including the iconic Aristargos white blend, the Elpidios red blend, and prestigious single-vineyard selections. David & Nadia are also dedicated members of the Old Vine Project, focusing on preserving and showcasing South Africa’s heritage vineyards older than 35 years.

Terroir

The David & Nadia terroir is defined by the diverse soils of the Swartland, particularly around the Paardeberg mountain. They focus on organically farmed, dry-land bush vines that must struggle in the harsh environment. The core of their winemaking lies in exploring different soil types: from the decomposed granite of Paardeberg, which imparts flinty freshness and texture, to the shale and iron-rich clays found elsewhere in the region, adding structure and depth. This mosaic approach allows them to blend fruit from various microclimates and altitudes, a technique most evident in their Chenin Blanc and Grenache Noir. By combining deep-rooted old vines with poor granite soils, they achieve remarkable flavor concentration while maintaining lower alcohol levels and vibrant natural acidity.
