David & Nadia Aristargos 2023

David & Nadia Aristargos 2023

Manufacturer: David & Nadia

An elegant and layered affair with a firm minerality. The nose is dominated by the purity of ripe pears, quince, and white peaches, with subtle undertones of beeswax and fresh herbs. The aromatic profile seamlessly transitions into a complex palate defined by excellent acidity and a structure derived from granitic soils. The wine is highly sophisticated and energetic, showcasing clear traces of old bush vines and maturation in neutral oak barrels and concrete. The rich, textured finish combines stone fruit notes with minerality and a slight salinity, creating a long-lasting experience that invites you back for another sip.

About the Winery

David & Nadia is a family-owned project established in 2010 by husband-and-wife team David and Nadia Sadie in the Swartland region. David, a Swartland native, and Nadia, a qualified soil scientist and viticulturist, joined forces to craft wines that are a genuine reflection of their land. They are considered among the "young guns" of the South African wine revolution, shifting away from bold, oak-driven styles toward elegance, freshness, and minerality. Their philosophy is rooted in biological farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, utilizing only indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur. Based in a restored 220-year-old cellar on the Paardebosch farm, they produce highly sought-after ranges including the iconic Aristargos white blend, the Elpidios red blend, and prestigious single-vineyard selections. David & Nadia are also dedicated members of the Old Vine Project, focusing on preserving and showcasing South Africa’s heritage vineyards older than 35 years.

Terroir

The David & Nadia terroir is defined by the diverse soils of the Swartland, particularly around the Paardeberg mountain. They focus on organically farmed, dry-land bush vines that must struggle in the harsh environment. The core of their winemaking lies in exploring different soil types: from the decomposed granite of Paardeberg, which imparts flinty freshness and texture, to the shale and iron-rich clays found elsewhere in the region, adding structure and depth. This mosaic approach allows them to blend fruit from various microclimates and altitudes, a technique most evident in their Chenin Blanc and Grenache Noir. By combining deep-rooted old vines with poor granite soils, they achieve remarkable flavor concentration while maintaining lower alcohol levels and vibrant natural acidity.
