Manufacturer: Steenberg
Steenberg Catharina is the flagship red blend of Steenberg Vineyards, named in honour of Catharina Ras, the remarkable founder of the historic Steenberg estate established in 1682. Crafted only from the finest vineyard parcels, this Bordeaux-inspired blend represents the pinnacle of red winemaking at Steenberg and showcases the exceptional quality of the Constantia wine region. Each varietal is harvested separately at optimal ripeness and vinified individually to preserve its unique character. The components are then matured in French oak barrels before the final blend is assembled, resulting in a wine of remarkable depth, elegance, and complexity. Extended bottle ageing further enhances its harmony and refinement. The bouquet is rich and expressive, revealing layers of blackcurrant, cassis, dark cherry, and plum, intertwined with notes of cedarwood, cigar box, graphite, dark chocolate, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and beautifully structured, supported by refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Concentrated dark fruit flavours are complemented by nuances of mocha, tobacco, and oak spice, leading to a long, sophisticated, and persistent finish.Steenberg Catharina is a wine of distinction and pedigree, offering exceptional drinking pleasure today while rewarding careful cellaring for many years to come.

About the Winery
Steenberg Wine Estate is the oldest registered farm in the Cape, with a history dating back to 1682 when the estate was founded by Catharina Ras in the Constantia Valley near Cape Town. Originally known as Swaaneweide (“The Feeding Place of Swans”), it was among the earliest agricultural properties established in the region. Over more than three centuries, Steenberg evolved from a historic farm into one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates. A major transformation took place during the extensive redevelopment of the 1990s, when the vineyards, cellar facilities and historic buildings were carefully restored. Today, Steenberg is renowned for producing premium wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, that express the distinctive character of the cool-climate Constantia region. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in respect for its rich heritage, environmentally responsible farming and the pursuit of elegant wines that reflect their origin. Through a combination of history, innovation and exceptional quality, Steenberg has earned its place among South Africa’s most respected wine producers.

Terroir
The terroir of Steenberg is shaped by its unique location in the Constantia Valley, one of South Africa’s coolest wine-growing regions. The vineyards are situated at elevations of approximately 60 to 160 metres above sea level on south-eastern slopes that benefit from refreshing maritime breezes from False Bay. A key feature of the estate is its decomposed granite soils, which retain sufficient moisture while providing ideal conditions for balanced vine growth. Mild temperatures, reliable winter rainfall and an extended growing season allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving aromatic intensity, freshness and natural acidity. This combination of cool maritime influences, diverse microclimates and mineral-rich granite soils gives Steenberg wines their distinctive elegance, vibrancy and strong sense of place, characteristics that are particularly evident in the estate’s acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc wines.
