Idiom Semillon 2023
Manufacturer: Idiom
An elegant and complex wine with a distinct saline character. The ethereal nose combines the freshness of lemon and lime zest with deeper notes of yellow custard and white spices. On the palate, the aromatic profile seamlessly evolves from hints of green apple and white peach into the typical waxy texture characteristic of the Semillon variety. The wine is highly sophisticated and energetic, having gained subtle undertones of biscuits through barrel fermentation and aging. The structured finish with firm acidity creates a long-lasting experience and absolutely invites you back for another sip.

About the Winery
Idiom is a family project of the Bottega family, established in 1999 in the southernmost part of the Stellenbosch region. Alberto Bottega and his children, Roberto, Laura, and Silvana, joined forces to create wines that are a true reflection of their land and a unique interpretation of European varieties in a South African context. Unlike many neighboring estates, Idiom focuses on a vast range of cultivars, including rare Italian varieties, bringing new elegance and diversity to the region. Their philosophy is based on respecting "Old World" traditions combined with innovation, culminating in the 2016 opening of their iconic modern cellar and restaurant at the foot of the Helderberg mountains. The winery is highly sought after for its masterful blends, such as the Bordicon and Rodanico ranges, which consistently earn high ratings of 90+ points.

Terroir
he Idiom terroir is defined by its unique location on the southern slopes of the Helderberg mountains at altitudes ranging from 200 to 350 meters. Key to their wines is working with diverse soils dominated by decomposed granite and stony earth with a clay base that excels at moisture retention. This mosaic approach allows them to blend grapes from different microclimates and altitudes, which is particularly evident in their complex "Cape Blends." A crucial factor is the proximity to the ocean; cooling breezes from False Bay moderate the summer heat, ensuring natural acidity, freshness, and a slow ripening process that results in a high concentration of aromatic compounds.
